How to shorten your long URL with Bitly

First a little terminology lesson. “Bitly” is the name of the company. They call their short links “bitlinks” and the first part of the shortened link is starts with a “bit.ly”.

Which means Bitly take long URLs and shrink them into much smaller ones. Then, when you enter them into your web browser, you get converted back to their full length. For example, bit.ly/1c92v5e will take you to the Tosinadegoroyeblog home page.

Bitly is a full service and one of the top of the URL shortening game. It's one of the most widely used options out there as a business grade URL shortener it stands out for its business offering Part of the appeal is that Bit.ly is simple and easy to use.

It has a comprehensive dashboard where you can track statistics about your links, such as click-through rates, geographic data of people visiting your links, and so forth.

With Bitly's free limited account, you can customize your shortened URLs, track click rates, and get information about your top referrers, but only for 500 branded links and 10,000 non-branded links.

It's a generous free plan and could very well be adequate for some small businesses. It enterprise-grade accounts custom pricing allows you to make as many branded links as you want, plus see more data in reports about who clicks your links.

Bitly is the best URL shortener for large businesses looking to brand and track links, and it's a great choice for small businesses that want to generate short URLs and follow their stats for a modest number of campaigns.

I don’t know when the first link shortener was created but it really came into its own when Twitter began to take off, thanks to its 140-character limit.
Note: Bitly does not create short links for Instagram and pinterest.

Google has their own link shortener which they called goo.gl but it was shut down around march 2018 for new customer, its only available for their existing customers till it will be finally reopen on march 30 2019.

It’s crucial to keep the SEO power in mind while shortening your links, many links are long and wordy for SEO reasons because one of the factor google and other search engine consider are keyword in the url. As the url describe the content of the link.
